If you’re both a product junkie and a bibliophile like me, you’re scouring the shelves for new and exciting books on makeup and beauty. Below, some of my top picks that are scheduled to be released in 2013. You can pre-order any of them by clicking the linked title of the book. Happy reading!
This ultimate guide for advanced makeup artists will be released on January 19, 2013. The revised edition includes a DVD for step-by-step instructions, recipes for making your own prosthetics, and more. I’m truly excited about this update and can’t wait to see what cutting-edge techniques I can learn.
The Star Shiner: Memoir of a Celebrity Make-Up Artist: Evan Richardson’s work has appeared on many of my favorite magazines (hello, Italian Vogue!) and has worked with numerous photographers, including my beloved Irving Penn. In this memoir, he dishes about making up everyone from Tallulah Bankhead to Madonna, with tons of stars in between. I’m imagining it as a cross between Truman Capote sitting down to dish and Bobbi Brown giving you makeup tips as she plans a new project. This book is slated to be released in paperback on March 15, 2013.
Finally, there’s The Experience of Beauty in the Middle Ages (Oxford-Warburg Studies). The nerd in me is obsessed with anything that comes out of OUP (Oxford University Press). This book is accessible to the general reader as well as the scholar, and covers a wide range of ways in which medieval conceptions of beauty influenced society, art, religion, and other aspects of daily life. The hefty price tag is offset by the fact the book will be released July 1–plenty of time for me to save my pennies.
